| 0-999 BCD ripple counter demonstration | ||
In a ripple counter, the flip-flop output transition serves as a source for triggering other flip-flops.
In other words, the clock pulse (CP) input of all flip-flops (except the first) are triggered
not by the incoming pulses bur rather by the transition that occurs in other flip flops. In this
section, instead of rippling flip-flops, I have cascaded BCD counter
that I had demonstrated earlier.
By cascading BCD counters, every tenth pulse of a counter is used to trigger the next counter, essentially creating a 0-999 counter from three individual 0-9 counters. You can find the circuit file for the 0-999 counter here. The interesting thing to note in this circuit is the use of custom BCD counter integrated circuits that we had developed earlier. You can click on any of the ICs to see the internal circuitry.
