As a kid, art came naturally, as it comes to every child. I spent reams of papers trying to make Micky & Donald, an occasional Goofy and of course the traditional scenery - mountains, sun with huge rays, flock of birds, the omnipresent river and the palm trees. It was fun while it lasted. I could never appreciate or understand the concept of art being a media for expressions... for me art was always an engineering problem, begging to be solved. Color was neither my strong area nor did I have much liking for it. To me it was more of an impediment, drawing attention away from the structural details. The realization that it was the structural aspect of art that fascinated me came quite late. The realization help clear a lot of cobwebs and growling hinges. For one, it became clear that I need to do a lot of study on structural aspects before I attempted to solve higher order problems like skin shading. From the many books I read, there was one from which I learnt a lot.

It took many years for me to digest all the revelant information. I could now look at a picture and see the bones within, feel the muscles straining and in the end solving the mystery of the way the skin was streched. Till the time I was with frames and trusses, tools were never an issue. The moment I ventured into shading, a whole new dimension of tools & instruments opened up. It took me some time to gather and experiement with a variety of papers, pencils and instruments to realize the subset that worked best for me.

You can find some of the tools I use for my sketches here.
